Want to learn about collectible movie posters?

There are no set rules when it comes to deciding what to collect. Go with what you like. There are many people who will only purchase motion picture art by format, such as lobby cards. Others opt to collect based on the country of origin, for example, all Italian posters. Still yet, some collectors prefer to collect only within a particular genre or certain preferred film titles. The combinations are limitless. The best way is to go with your instincts.

Ordering a poster

When you are ordering a poster, know with whom you are dealing. Different dealers have different definitions of grading condition. Make sure you understand what is meant by “good condition”. Ask about tears, stains, scratches, pin or staple holes, fading or any retouches or repairs. While mounting a poster on linen-backing is a perfectly acceptable archival process, it can also be used to hide severe condition problems. Make sure you know the condition of the poster before it was linen-backed and how much restoration has been done to it.

Another concern is how your posters will be packed and shipped. A poster may leave the shop in good condition, but due to negligent packing, arrives in worse condition. It is recommended to ask about the dealer’s/shop’s return policy in the unfortunate event that item is damaged or turns out to be in lesser condition than you imagined. Usual practice is to insure the package for the dollar value of the item. When returning items, consideration should be taken as to repacking. The best method is to use reinforced poster tubes, wrapping the posters in brown Kraft paper or plastic. For flat items, use a couple of thick pieces of cardboard, cut slightly larger than the item itself, and packing tape around the edges.

Re-issue vs. Reproduction

Many people are confused by the difference between a reissue and a reproduction of a poster. Many movies were released subsequent to their original dates. For instance, The Wizard of Oz was originally released in 1939, but it was re-released in ‘49, ‘51, ‘55, etc. The studio produced ad campaigns for all of these releases. All of the posters (lobby cards, etc.) are designated as “re-issues”. Oftentimes, the artwork is completely different, but interesting and valuable in its own right. A reproduction, however, is simply a photographic copy of an original poster and has little or no value as a collectible.

How do you know the difference?

Many favorite collectible movie posters are in such high demand that some companies have reproduced them. There are many ways to tell a reproduction from a re-issue/original poster. For instance, nearly all one sheets posters before 1970 were folded by the printer prior to being distributed to theaters, with very rare exception. (To find out about one sheets, see below “Standard Poster Sizes”.) A rolled, original poster of Casablanca simply does not exist. Making sure the fine print is in focus is another indication of originality. If you have any doubt about authenticity, contact a trusted dealer to give you his or her opinion.

Preserving your collection

Like most art mediums, certain materials require the appropriate preservation methods to insure their longevity. One method in poster preservation is a process called “linen-backing”. This entails mounting the poster on a treated canvas material. A sheet of rice paper is sandwiched between the poster and canvas and adhered to both with an archival glue. This permits the process to be reversed at a future time, if needed. “Paper-Backing” is a similar process, except in lieu of canvas, the poster is mounted on thick archival paper. For the most part, posters are usually linen-backed.

One warning is clear: Never dry mount posters! Dry mounting yellows the paper and cannot be reversed. Accordingly, it devalues the poster. Another recommendation is to keep your collection out of direct sunlight. If you have a large collection both in size and quantity, you may want to invest in flat file drawers. They can be purchased in most larger art supply stores.

For display in frames, we suggest using UV filtered glass or Plexiglas. Also because of changes in weather, resulting moisture and mildew from condensation can wreck havoc on paper. Some solutions are to use a frame with “spacers” which elevate the glass or Plexiglas off the poster, or by having the poster matted professionally.

Most of all, use common sense when handling, storing and displaying your motion picture art collection. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us and we’ll help you in any way we can.

Standard poster sizes

Lobby Card
11″x 14″ (28 x 36 cm) Also known as ’scene cards’. These cards were situated in the lobby of a theater and were originally distributed in sets of 8; they can be sold separately or in a set.

Title Card
11″ x 14″ (28 x 36cm) The first card of a lobby card set. It usually has a more complete list of credits and more elaborate Graphics.

Jumbo Lobby Card
14″ x 17″ (36 x 42cm) Usually photographic and unlike Lobby Cards, they are usually borderless.

Window Card

Iron Man is an action game based on the 2008 movie of the same title starring Robert Downey Jr. and Terrence Howard. In the game, you will play as billionaire industrialist and playboy Tony Stark who spends millions of dollars on a suit of armor that turns him into his Iron Man persona. With his suit, he gains the ability to fly, blast repulsor rays, and hurl ICBM missiles with ease.
GamePlay

The weapons Iron Man was able to use in the demo were fairly generic… standard tanks, SAMs (surface-to-air missiles), and anti-air guns. His main weapons will be repulsor rays, shot either from his palms or from a node on his chest. Repulsor rays from the node on his chest are more powerful than those from his hands, but will drain more energy. He also has the ability to grab incoming missiles and redirect them back to the launcher that shot them. Iron Man’s “hover” and “fly” abilities are separate. While hovering, he drifts from side to side, enabling easier firing of repulsor rays. Two different flying speeds are available: normal and super. Using super-speed offers less maneuverability.

Film or movie poster originally is just used to advertise a movie. With time, film or movie poster (that produced to be used on theatres) have become one of the film memorabilia. The collecting of film memorabilia began with such things as scrap-books, autographs, photographs, and industry magazines, but quickly expanded in the post-World War II era. Collectors began seeking out original advertising material, and the classic “one sheet” film poster became the pinnacle object to own for any given film. Other material, such as lobby cards, other-sized posters, international posters, personality posters, and glass slides also began to become highly sought after. Today, the field of film memorabilia collecting has grown into an internationally recognised community of increasingly serious and financially secure collectors, making it one of the fastest areas of speculation for investment.

Huge success of Iron Man Movie has made Iron Man movie poster become one of the most movie memorabilia sought after right now. There are several version of Iron Man Movie Poster that produced to market. You can see the final version of Iron Man Movie Poster above, yes it is seems like Star Wars movie poster I would say the latest Iron Man movie poster release is by far the best one simply because it’s more complete.

Iron Man (Anthony Edward “Tony” Stark) is a fictional character, a comic book superhero appearing in publications from Marvel Comics. Created by writer-editor Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, and artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby, Iron Man first appeared in Tales of Suspense #39 (March 1963). Tony Stark, after suffering a severe heart injury and being kidnapped, was forced to build a devastating weapon. He instead created a suit of power armor to save his life and help protect the world as Iron Man. He is a wealthy industrialist and genius inventor that created military weapons and whose metal suit is laden with technological devices that enable him to fight crime.

Throughout most of his career, Iron Man has been a member of the superhero team the Avengers and has been featured in several incarnations of his own various comic book series. He has been adapted into several animated TV shows, as well as the 2008 film Iron Man starring Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Forbes has ranked Iron Man among the wealthiest fictional characters on their annual ranking. BusinessWeek has also ranked Iron Man as one of the top ten most intelligent fictional characters in American comics.

Iron Man’s premiere was a collaboration among editor and story-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, story-artist Don Heck, and Jack Kirby. In 1963, Lee had been toying with the idea of a businessman superhero. He set out to make the new character a rich, glamorous ladies’ man, but one with a secret that would plague and torment him as well. Lee based this playboy’s personality on Howard Hughes, explaining, “Howard Hughes was one of the most colorful men of our time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a ladies’ man and finally a nutcase”; While Lee intended to write the story himself, he eventually handed the premier issue over to Lieber, who fleshed out the story. The art, meanwhile, was split between Kirby and Heck. “He designed the costume”, Heck said of Kirby, “because he was doing the cover. The covers were always done first. But I created the look of the characters, like Tony Stark and his secretary Pepper Potts”.

Iron Man first appeared in 13- to 18-page stories in Tales of Suspense, which featured anthology science fiction and supernatural stories. The character’s original costume was a bulky grey armor, which later turned golden in his second story (issue #40, April 1963), and then redesigned again as a sleeker red-and-golden armor starting in issue #48 (Dec. 1963), drawn by Steve Ditko. In his premiere, Iron Man was an anti-communist hero, defeating various Vietnamese agents; Lee later regretted this early focus. Throughout the character’s comic book series, technological advancement and national defense were constant themes for Iron Man, but later issues developed Stark into a more complex and vulnerable character as they depicted his battle with alcoholism and other personal difficulties.

From issue #59 (Nov. 1964) to its final issue #99 (March 1968), the anthological science-fiction backup stories in Tales of Suspense were replaced by a feature starring the superhero Captain America. After issue #99 (March 1968), the book’s title was changed to Captain America. Iron Man stories moved to the title Iron Man and Sub-Mariner in April 1968, before the “Golden Avenger” made his solo debut with The Invincible Iron Man #1 (May 1968).

Writers have updated the war in which Stark is injured. In the original 1963 story, it was Vietnam. Later, in the 1990s, it was updated to be the first Gulf War, and then updated again to be Afghanistan. However, his time with the Asian scientist Yin Sen is consistent through nearly all incarnations of the Iron Man origin, depicting Stark and Yin Sen building the original armor together. One exception is the direct-to-DVD animated feature film The Invincible Iron Man, in which the first armor Stark uses is not the first Iron Man suit.

Comic book character Tony Stark, better known as the superhero Iron Man, is officially cool right now. Thank goodness, Foggy Nelson aka director Jon Favreau chose the right cast (Robert Downey Jr., Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow), right effects team (Industrial Light and Magic) and just the right touch of punch and panache to craft the ultimate comic book origin movie, which at times is even better than the first “Spider-man” movie.

Below are 10 things about the Armored Avenger as compiled from various sources:

1. Iron Man (Anthony Edward “Tony” Stark) was created by Marvel’s Stan “The Man” Lee, scripter Larry Lieber and artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby. His first appearance was in Tales of Suspense #39 (March 1963). That means he’s about 45 years old, which in comic book time is probably in his late twenties or early 30s. After all, Superman is still looking like a healthy 30-year-old despite debuting 75 years ago!

2. At least two Filipino artists have handled Iron Man. Image Comics co-founder Whilce Portacio handled the artistic chores of the Iron Man book for the “Heroes Reborn” storyline in the mid-90s. Former Superman artist Leinil Yu currently draws Iron Man when the character pops up in the pages of the New Avengers comic book and the mini-series “Secret Invasion.”

3. James Rhodes, Stark’s bodyguard, is the second Marvel character to wear the Iron Man armor. As Iron Man, Rhodes would participate in some of the more memorable storylines in the Marvel Universe including the “Secret Wars” series where groups of heroes and villains duked it out in an alien planet. Rhodes would later co-found the West Coast Avengers and would also don the War Machine armor, which was also designed by Stark.

4. Iron Man comic book fans generally agree that there are two definitive storylines most popularly associated with Iron Man. The first is the Demon in a Bottle story (Iron Man #120-128), which dealt with Tony Stark’s battle with alcoholism while trying to fend off a corporate takeover by rival Justin Hammer. The second is the Armor Wars storyline (Iron Man #225-232) where Stark decides to take steps to stop other people from using his technology for evil. This storyline is particularly noteworthy as it was one of the first times that Stark would take on fellow Avenger Captain America (shades of Civil War).

5. Iron Man is one of the few Marvel characters who does not have a secret identity. Iron Man went public (twice) in his comic book, revealing that he was both creator and wearer of the Iron Man armor. Other Marvel characters whose identities are public include the recently deceased Captain America (Steve Rogers) and members of the Fantastic Four.

6. In the Marvel Universe, Stark has already died! It happened in “The Crossing” storyline in the Avengers comic book. However, his death would be shortlived as Stark would return as a teenage Iron Man who would then merge with his older self (don’t ask!) Of course, as comic book resurrections go, Iron Man is in good company with other superheroes who have come back from the dead including Superman, Elektra and the X-men’s Jean Grey.

7. In the Ultimates Universe, Tony Stark does not get injured after being kidnapped in Afghanistan but he does have “a tumor in his brain the size of a golf ball.”

8. Iron Man has a limited number of bad guys. Comic book readers would no doubt recognize the movie’s reference to the Mandarin, an evil Fu Manchu-like character that does battle using 10 rings of power. Other Iron Man baddies include Russia’s own armored superhero Titanium Man, the time-traveling Kang the Conqueror and the Crimson Dynamo.

9. Stark is probably one of the most influential characters in the Marvel Universe and is in the same league of braniacs such as Fantastic Four leader Reed Richards, the Avengers’ Hank Pym and the X-men’s Henry McCoy also known as Beast. Stark was previously named US secretary of defense in the Marvel Universe. In the Civil War storyline, Stark would lead efforts to register all superheroes in the Marvel Universe, which put him in direct opposition to Captain America. (Ironically, it was after this storyline that Captain America was killed by an assassin’s bullet.) Iron Man is currently the director of SHIELD.

10. Stark is the 10th richest man in the world, at least according to Forbes Magazine’s Fictional 15. With assets estimated at $6 billion, Stark beat out Lucius Malfoy ($1.6 billion), Gomez Addams ($2 billion) and the fake Steve Jobs ($5.7 billion). Sadly, Tony Stark is allegedly less affluent than Scrooge McDuck ($28.8 billion), Richie Rich ($16.1 billion) and DC’s Bruce Wayne ($7 billion).

Iron Man Movies has become a Worldwide Blockbuster Movie when premiere on May 2, 2008. Per the final weekend numbers released today, the movie grossed $102.1 million from Friday to Sunday—the 10th biggest opening in Hollywood history. Add in the foreign box office, and the film’s weekend take stands at nearly $200 million just in 3 days!

Its opening number was bigger than those of Batman Begins ($48.7 million), Superman Returns ($52.5 million), the first two X-Men movies and Spider-Man 2 ($88.2 million). Not bad for a character that’s considered B-list to the SpiderMan, Batman or Superman that consider as A-list hero.

Iron Man is a superhero film based on the fictional Marvel Comics character Iron Man. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film is about Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), a billionaire industrialist and master engineer who is captured by terrorists in Afghanistan. Ordered to build a missile for them, Stark uses his resources instead to build a powered exoskeleton to make his escape. Returning to the United States, Stark improves his armor and becomes the technologically advanced superhero Iron Man. Gwyneth Paltrow plays his personal assistant Pepper Potts, Terrence Howard plays jet pilot James Rhodes, and Jeff Bridges plays Obadiah Stane.
